Corfu or Kerkyra as it is in Greek, is an Ionian island. It has a selection of resorts both lively and more tranquil. The more lively resorts include Kavos and Benitses. It is approximately 35 miles long and 16 miles wide.
The capital is Corfu town, which has excellent shopping facilities and plenty of traditional architecture in the old part of the town. The islands airport is situated close to Corfu town. The island has some beautiful scenery, with long sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages and lush ragged countryside. One of the more beautiful beaches is at Myritiotissa on the West Coast. The highest peak is mount Pantokrator which stands at around 1000m high. A popular tourist attraction is the Achilleon Palace which was built in the late 1800's. There are also a number of museums on the island giving a view into the island's long history.
